Even Pliny in Roman times described asparagus as being a speciality of Ravenna where it was cultivated so widely, they drained a major river to get enough sand and sediment for it's cultivation.
In the 15th century, White asparagus was grown in Venice, Friuli, Venezia Giulia, and Trentino Alto Adige, Piemonte, Emilia Romagna and Tuscany for the green varieties and Liguria for the Purple of Albenga.
