Grows back after cutting! Cutting lettuces: These are found in green or red varieties and offer convenience and growing ease. They can be grown in pots if desired, grow quicker than a head of lettuce, you cut as much as you need and they grow back again after cutting. If you only need 2 leaves for a sandwich, then just cut 2 leaves, but with a head of lettuce you need to take the whole head. These types of lettuces are often called 'cut and come again', but it's worth not cutting them more than 3 times as the leaves can start to go hard. Some varieties worth seeking out are Green - Green Salad Bowl, Bionda Ricciolina, Verde Ricciolina, Bionda a Foglia di Quercia and Bionda a Foglia Liscia. Red - Rossa Ricciolina, Mora d'Inverno, Biscia Rossa and Red Salad Bowl.Slugs and snails like lettuce so you may have to use slug pellets, beer traps or other measures. Personally, I don’t much care for slug pellets, but I do use them from time to time when it has been very wet, but only sparingly. Beer traps work very well as do coffee beans as they release emollient oils which the slugs don’t like, but the best I have found so far is Marmite. If you smear it around your pots or containers, slugs just will not cross it because it is so salty, and you know what salt does to slugs and snails. It may stain your pots, but it stays on your pot and works. I adore marmite and so am reluctant to use the real thing on my pots, preferring instead the own brand copies from my supermarket. Talking of Marmite, my mum was feeding me soldiers with marmite in Italy once and my aunty said ‘what’s that’ and stuck her finger into the jar, scooping up a good quantity of the black mixture and putting it into her mouth. Suffice to say, she was shocked at the flavour and couldn’t believe that we gave it to children to eat in Britain. Mum still sniggers when she tells me that story. |
